Abstract
Benoit Frydman proposes to identify a Straussian model of textual interpretation based on medieval hermeneutics, highlighting how Leo Strauss analyzes Spinoza's enterprise in the Theological-Political Treatise. Spinoza founds modern hermeneutics by separating the meaning of the text from its truth, which defuses the normative power of the Bible and paves the way for modern natural law. Benoit Frydman concludes that the choice of a method of interpretation determines the relationship a civilization maintains with its tradition and takes on a crucial political dimension, in opposition to dominant historicism.
